While on the topic of Ethernet switches we wanted to revisit another new switch, this one from Synergistic Research, which sonically is the best we have heard. We published a brief announcement a couple of months back when SR released the product, but felt it appropriate to revisit it now that we have received our Library samples, and so have had a chance for extended listening.
Applying the technologies originally developed for their Powercell line of power line conditioners, and subsequently incorporated into several of their other products including the Tranquility Base isolation platforms and their Active Ground Block grounding systems, the latest product from Synergistic Research is an Ethernet Switch with active EM conditioning. The "Ethernet Switch UEF" ($2295 - add $300 for 230v) offers a substantial upgrade to the performance of digital music systems which rely on an ethernet distribution box.
We first came to appreciate the sonic importance of the ethernet switch to audio performance when we received the English Electric 8Switch ($595) discussed in the previous article. It proves the concept of a switch specifically designed for audio applications vs. computer applications.
For the Synergistic Research switch, in addition to the EM Cell to condition the signal and act as a built in Tranquility Base, this new SR switch addresses vibration by incorporating carbon fiber into the chassis, which is milled from a solid billet of aluminum. Long design story short, the Synergistic Research switch elevates sonic performance, frankly to a degree we did not think possible from an upgrade to the switch. Quite remarkable! If 5 ports are sufficient for your needs you should definitely consider it.
There are several special offers for purchase of power cords and ethernet cables together with purchase of the SR Switch. You can view these bundles in the drop down menus on the main product page.
In short: highly recommended!
Both the SR Ethernet Switch and the English Electric 8Switch are available for audition through The Cable Company Library.
