Sumiko does not introduce new models often. Their Blue Point No. 2, Blue Point Special EVO III, Blackbird, and the Pearwood Celebration II, all making music for over 15 years, are now being replaced with upgraded models.
Sumiko's CELEBRATION 40
As they approach their fortieth anniversary Sumiko has announced a replacement for the Pearwood Celebration II, the newCelebration 40.
The Celebration 40, at the same $2799 price as the earlier Pearwood cartridge, adopts the same solid, ultra-low-mass Micro-ridge stylus used in their flagshipPalo Santos Presentation cartridge. Adding the Micro-ridge stylus better resolves micro-detail and spatiality, and the Micro-ridge is a superb tracker.
Rather than pearwood, the Celebration 40 uses a new plumwood body with resonance characteristics which lend a greater sense of harmonic depth.
One niggle with the earlier Pearwood cartridge that is addressed in the new model: Sumiko has modified the front face of the plumwood housing, clearing the sight line so you can view the entire cantilever in setup.
BLUE POINT No. 3 Sumiko has also updated another one of their iconic designs, the Blue Point No.2 High Output Moving Coil. Compatible with any Moving Magnet phono stage and a wide range of tonearms, this affordable gem has brought tens of thousands of listeners into the world of high-fidelity analog.
By redesigning the cartridge’s housing and improving the generator’s mounting, they were able to significantly reduce the systems’ internal vibrations, resulting in greater clarity and a smoother overall tonal balance. This redesign also adds threaded inserts in the cartridge body and improves visibility of the stylus tip which makes mounting simpler and more precise.
TheBlue Point Number 3($499) is available in High Output and Low Output variants. The High Output can be used with any Moving Magnet phono stage with 47k loading, while the Low Output is a high value companion to the many excellent, affordable phono stages that support Moving Coils.
