REL has, for the last year, been upgrading all of their top series subwoofers. The last of these upgrades is the new model 212/SX ($4599).
Similar in concept to the award-winning 212/SE it replaces, we have always considered this double-height model to be REL's best answer for those of us who would love to install a line array of three stacked G1's on each side, but can't get our budget around $30k worth of subs. Think of the 212/SX as a single box stack, well-suited to large rooms and large systems.
The 212/SX uses 4 x 12" drivers: two front-firing active drivers, and two passive drivers, one rear and the other facing down.
SX-version upgrades include carbon fiber "blades" on the back of each driver for vibration control, a new faster and wider bandwidth filter, a new 1000 watt digital amp, and some cabinet changes. If you are familiar with the 212/SE, the SX model is slightly taller, a little deeper and a little thinner. The upgrade objective: speed and control.
