The New Fosgometer v2.

The New Fosgometer v2.
The New Fosgometer v2.

A decade ago Jim Fosgate designed a device for checking azimuth on a cartridge/arm setup called the Fozgometer, a clever tool used with a test LP to measure the left and right channel information to allow for adjustment of the azimuth for better channel separation. The original Fozgometer production sold through and then the device became unavailable. Now ten years later we welcome the announcement of the more sensitive and accurate Fozgometer v2 ($400).

Why is azimuth adjustment important?  In a high quality analog playback system optimization of sound-staging and center-imaging absolutely depends on the azimuth being correct in order to minimize crosstalk between channels. Correct azimuth is defined as being when the stylus of the cartridge is in the exact center of the groove, so the same amount of information from the right and left hand groove walls is being read by the stylus.

The Fozgometer v2 is a small portable battery-powered or wall-powered meter. It is designed to be used specifically with the Azimuth Adjustment tracks on side one of The Ultimate Analogue Test LP by Analogue Productions ($40) to measure channel separation, channel balance, and signal direction quickly and accurately. Short of an oscilloscope or computer program, this is the one of the best tools for fine set up of your high performance phono cartridge. Highly recommended!
