Summer Against Hunger Summary

As we approach Thanksgiving, and now that the loose ends are tied up, I wanted to share the results for the August fundraiser for CARE.

This year is a great example of what we have been trying to accomplish during this long-running program. Let's talk about Madagascar:

One of the poorest countries in the world, and suffering an ongoing, record 4 year drought, more than 60% of the rural population lives without access to safe drinking water, and 80% lack access to hygienic sanitation. 50% of children suffer from malnutrition and the leading cause of child mortality is diarrhea.

Working together with CARE, USAID is willing to invest $30mm over 5 years for a program to provide safe water to 300,000 people, and access to safe sanitation for 375,000 people, while eliminating open defecation in 2500 communities. But there is a $565,000 private money requirement to unlock this funding, and that is where our 2021 Summer Against Hunger contribution completes the funding picture.
