As far as we are concerned the REL Acoustics subwoofer line really has no performance competition when used for 2 channel audio due to REL's proprietary high level connection protocols. With any other subs you must connect via a long interconnect to the preamp, which both loads down the preamp and ignores the sonic impact the amplifiers have on speaker sound and performance. (This is fine in a home theater where you will want to use the dedicated subwoofer effects output on your surround processor anyway, whether using REL subs or any other brand, but a real disadvantage in a stereo music system.) REL's high level connection from the amplifiers makes it far easier to sonically integrate the REL subs with the main loudspeakers.
The ultimate REL subwoofer arrangement is called a "Line Array" where you stack 2 or 3 subwoofers for each channel. With subwoofers, more is generally better, but only if you do it right. As you might expect integrating multiple subs is more difficult than integrating one or two, but if approached methodically it can still be a relatively painless set up, and one that yields awesome results.
REL's designer, John Hunter, has filmed a set up video for a Line Array "6 pack". This 30 minute video is not only interesting for those actually considering a Line Array, but does a great job of discussing successful integration of simpler single or dual sub set-ups. Worth a look if you are considering the addition of subwoofers to your music system.
Remember, with successful sub implementation, "it's not the bass, it's the space."
