In keeping with their efforts to upgrade their entire line to be faster and more dynamic with higher output, REL Acoustics just announced the new T/x Series subwoofers. An update of the still popular, 5 year old T/i series, the Class A/B amplification is retained, with the same Arrow Wireless system ($199) as an option. The entire T/x line up is available in black or white.
The T/9x at $1449 is the top model in the T/x Series and upgrades the discontinued T/9i. The slightly larger cabinet volume allows for an increase in efficiency and output with less back pressure to permit tighter control of the driver.
The new T/7x at $1099 replaces the T/7i. REL promises a faster and more transparent design with increased power handling capacity from a cabinet with more volume, but which appears only minimally larger.
In the T/5x ($679) the volume of the cabinet is increased, but a clever change in the dimensions results in it not appearing larger. Now using the same longthrow 8" driver as the T/7x, it can play louder and deeper than the previous T/5i, if not quite the equal of the T/7x in its larger cabinet.
For over 25 years, REL has changed the way audiophiles think and feel about subwoofers. The new T/x Series includes their preferred-for-stereo high-level connection to your amplifier, as opposed to the more common subwoofer connection with an interconnect cable to the preamp (which is also available on the T/x Series for use with home theater processors). Using their high level connection REL subs can better take on the sonic characteristics of your music system to mesh seamlessly into your listening room. Most first-time REL users are surprised at how their entire system can sound so much bigger and more powerful, yet they’re unable to identify the REL’s specific contribution. "It's the space, not the bass."
