Clear Mg Open-back Headphones
Focal's Clear has been the leading open back headphone for under $1500, and we considered it a bargain at the price. I have written before that a decade ago these probably would have been considered one of the very best headphones ever made. Well they should be even more impressive with implementation of a new magnesium dome driver in the new model Clear Mg which began shipping in the last two weeks.

The result of three years of research and development, Focal's engineers combined this new alloy for greater "lightness", rigidity and damping: three primary success factors for any headphone (or speaker) driver. 

We are told that the light and flexible surround also provides better dynamics and greater bass impact. The sound should have greater precision and impact, particularly in the low frequencies, with more detail across the full spectrum.

The new grille has a honeycomb ‘M’-shaped design that more closely follows the curves of the driver. The more open design allows for a wider soundstage, while the reduced space between the driver and grille enables even more precise high-frequency reproduction. 

No price change at $1490 and quite an achievement.

Celestee Closed-back Headphones
Focal's latest effort to tackle the difficult challenge of manufacturing an affordable closed-back headphone is called Celestee ($990), and draws many of its cues from the outstanding Stellial model ($2990), which may be the best closed-back design anyone has ever come up with!

Focal definitely got the aesthetics right: the navy blue/copper look is as good as it gets. The performance is outstanding for the price and offers more than a glimpse of the reference level Stellia. Suffice it to say that if you want the acoustic isolation provided by closed-back headphones, and your budget tops out at $1000, you are unlikely to find better.
