EMT (“Elektromesstechnik") was founded in Berlin and began making turntables and cartridges in 1959. In 1965 the renowned TSD 15 cartridge was introduced and over its lifetime has been used in thousands of studios and broadcast facilities throughout the world. After changing hands the company moved their production facilities to Switzerland and is now headed up by Micha Huber, inventor of the famous Thales tonearm. The cartridge lineup has expanded to a dozen models.
After years of an "underground" reputation here in the US due to limited distribution, all of the legendary EMT cartridges are now available.
The current cartridge lineup begins with the high output (1.05mV) MC, HDS-006 model ($1760), which is also available as a high output Mono cartridge known as the HMD-025 ($1620).
In 2012, EMT hit the ball out of the park with the JDS P6.0 cartridg ($3380). It features a special multifaceted diamond that significantly ignores surface noise on the LP. The JSD Pure Black($4730) features the same multifaceted diamond stylus, but utilizes a sapphire cantilever for even greater performance.
The JSD VM ($5400) and JSP VM AG ($6075) offer the ability to tune the resonance of the cartridge to the tonearm with 3 specific included interchangeable inlays- unique in the industry!
Those of us that have been into analog for a long time welcome back the legendary cartridges of EMT with open arms. For those who are looking to up their analog "game" with cartridges that have unique features and exceptional performance- consider this!
